What is the learning experience?
The learning experience can be defined as the set of activities and processes that contribute to an individual’s learning and knowledge acquisition. The concept of learning experience refers to a model of learning that is based on direct and personal experience, which can be emotional, cognitive or behavioral.
Learners are engaged emotionally when, during the training, they feel inherently connected to other learners, instructors and the training context. On the other hand, when students are cognitively engaged, they feel good about their work. In addition, they have confidence in their ability to deeply understand and master new knowledge, even on their own.
Lastly, behavioral engagement is the shallowest form of learner engagement and develops an increased rate of attention, participation, persistence, concentration and involvement in learning-related activities.
In recent years, the concept of the learning experience has been gradually transformed thanks to the advent of new technologies. While the acquisition of knowledge and skills used to be closely linked to physical presence in the classroom, it’s now possible to manage the entire learning process remotely, ensuring flexibility and interactivity.
Learning experiences today integrate both traditional educational components such as lectures with contemporary interactions including games and using AI in education.
What constitutes the learning experience
By learning experience we mean everything that revolves around a person’s training, including several aspects:
- the content transmitted, i.e. the notions, skills and cognitive motivation enjoyed during training;
- the modes of teaching delivery, such as lectures, practical exercises, workshops, etc.;
- the interaction with lecturers and other learners, which encourage the exchange of ideas and collaboration;
- the learning strategies adopted according to one’s study style;
- the tools used, from books to digital platforms for e-learning;
- the extra activities carried out, such as project work, internships and other supplementary initiatives;
- the outcomes achieved, that is, the knowledge and skills actually gained.
The revolution in learning experience thanks to e-learning
Thanks to the tools for e-learning, the way of conceptualising learning has been revolutionised. The learning experience is no longer limited to activities carried out exclusively in the classroom, but can take place anywhere and at any time, following the timings and methods most suitable for each individual student.
Modern platforms for distance learning, the LMS (Learning Management Systems), now allow complete courses to be delivered online, making the learning experience even more personalised. Teachers and learners can interact via chat and video conferencing even while staying at a distance, while all learning materials can be accessed at any time via the Internet.
LMS also make it possible to track each individual’s educational journey, checking what content has been enjoyed and assessing progress. Students have the opportunity to self-assess their skills and knowledge through online tests and exercises, optimizing the time and mode of learning.
Thanks to the digitization of the learning experience, time and space constraints have been broken down. Courses can be taken following a personalised study plan, adaptable to each individual’s professional and family needs. There is no need to book in-person classes or travel to reach teaching rooms.
Robust online learning experience elements
There are several factors that can help e-learning courses achieve a successful learning experience.
Easy to use
If an LMS is too complex for its end users, then it should not be implemented. We need LMS that are in tune with the general conventions that people are used to, so as to minimize any friction in achieving educational outcomes.
Does not require any training for use
An LMS should be easy to use. In other words, its optimal use should require no training. Upon accessing the system, a quick glance should be enough to immediately understand how to use it efficiently. An overly complex LMS is a serious obstacle to training.
Engaging to use
In addition to being easy to use, an LMS should be truly engaging to use. An appealing, familiar, and engaging system will help users learn more effectively, ensuring that users can acquire new knowledge easily and quickly.
Leverages widely used standards
An online training software should not disrupt the way users acquire new knowledge and skills. Users learn online on a daily basis (such as preparing recipes, assembling furniture, or learning new languages), taking advantage of widely used training standards and conventions. It’s critical to understand how people learn in everyday life, using the essential elements of these approaches in e-learning to truly engage users.
